Students will continue solving and graphing inequalities that involve one operation.
Intentionality…
The purpose of the Day 2 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 1. Students will engage in a math talk and have an opportunity to complete independent purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas:
- In an inequality, the two expressions are not necessarily equal, which can be indicated by the symbols: >, <, ≤, or ≥.
- A number line can show the values that hold for an inequality.
- An open dot on a number line is used when an inequality involves “less than” or “greater than”, and a closed dot is used when it also includes “equal to”.
- Inequalities can be solved as an equation to identify those that hold for the inequality.
Math Talk
Today’s math talk aims to solidify our understanding of the symbols less than, greater than, and equal to and the difference between an equation and an inequality. Students will be asked to consider how the wording of various statements can be altered to change the scenario from an equation to an inequality.
Prompt:
Consider the statements below. Each statement represents an equation. How can the wording be altered to shift the scenario to an inequality?
Provide students an opportunity to pair (discuss with a partner), square (two sets of partners come together as a group of four), and ultimately share as a whole group. Students are encouraged to share their thinking amongst the learning community rather than direct responses to the teacher.
Visual Math Talk Prompt #1
Prompt:
- The grade six class is raising funds through a bake sale. They want to raise $80. If they sell each baked good for $4, how many do they need to sell?
Possible solutions:
- Greater than: The grade six class raises funds through a bake sale. They want to raise more than $80. If they sell each baked good for $4, how many do they need to sell?
Visual Math Talk Prompt #2
Prompt:
- The grade six class is collecting gently used coats for the local shelter. The shelter can accept 30 coats. If the class brought 12 coats Tuesday and 14 coats Wednesday, how many more coats can they collect?
Possible solutions:
- Less than or equal to: The grade six class collects gently used coats for the local shelter. The shelter can accept up to 30 coats. If the class brought 12 coats on Tuesday and 14 coats Wednesday, how many more coats can they collect?
Visual Math Talk Prompt #3
Prompt:
- The grade six class sends handwritten cards to the local retirement homes. Their goal is to send 75 cards this week. If they have five days to achieve their goal, how many cards do they have to write on average each day?
Possible solutions:
- Greater than or equal to: The grade six class sends handwritten cards to the local retirement homes. Their goal is to send at least 75 cards this week. If they have five days to achieve their goal, how many cards do they have to write on average each day?
