Students will continue expressing the probability of a chance event as a fraction on a probability line.
Intentionality…
The purpose of the Day 2 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 1. Students will engage in a math talk and have an opportunity to complete independent purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas:
- Fractions can express the probability of a chance event.
- The probability of a chance event is a number between 0 and 1, representing the likeliness of the event occurring.
- Numbers close to 1 indicate greater likelihood while a probability near 0 indicates an unlikely event.
Math Talk
Today’s visual math talk aims to solidify our understanding of the probability line and the key vocabulary to describe the likeliness of a chance event. Students will be asked to consider each probability line. They will be asked to estimate the probability as a fraction and describe the likeliness of the event.Â
Facilitator note:
Share each probability line, one at a time. Pause the video when prompted and allow students to discuss the fraction being expressed on the number line. Encourage students to communicate the likeliness of this event using appropriate vocabulary. After students have sufficient time to engage in this discussion, unpause the video and share the labelled probability line. Value all equivalent fractions shared for the point communicated on the probability line.
