Through This Assessment Opportunity…
Students will demonstrate the concepts and skills that they have developed in this unit.
The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the following big ideas.
- Regrouping or Trading occurs because each digit in the place value system can not have more than 9Â
- Number relationships provide the foundation for strategies to help students remember basic facts
- Addition of numbers within 50 by using the Addition strategy: Place Value/ AlgorithmÂ
Students might write and/or model their responses independently. Students can also be interviewed by their teacher.Â
An alternative assessment opportunity should be offered if this tool will not successfully capture what the student knows, understands or can do.
Math Talk
In Day 4 of this unit, students were exposed to math talks related to adding when regrouping or trading is necessary. The number talks for Day 5 will provide more opportunities for students to practice the strategy of trading. The last prompt in the set pushes the strategy beyond 100 to give educators the opportunity to see if the students can extend their understanding.Â

Visual Math Talk Prompt #1
As students are solving the question, watch for the necessary regrouping/trading to take place. Do students understand that they need to trade 10 ones for 1 ten? If students have a misconception, perhaps further modelling with the base ten manipulatives would assist.Â
32 + 18
Visual Math Talk Prompt #2
As stated in the last prompt, notice how students are addressing the regroup/trade process. Do they write 15 in the ones place value or do they regroup 10?Â
