In This Task…
Students will explore the subtraction concept of removal.
Intentionality…
The purpose of the Day 2 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 1. Students will engage in a string of related problems through a math talk and will have an opportunity to complete independent purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas.
- Part-whole relations: Relationships between addition & subtraction.
- One-to-one correspondence.
- One structure of subtraction is “removal”.
Math Talk
Related String of Problems
In order to encourage strategy of keeping one number whole and taking jumps back of ten and adding one more/one less, engage students in the following math talk. Consider modelling student thinking using a concrete number line with benchmark numbers identified.
