Through this math talk and purposeful practice, students are encouraged to use the number line to model the behaviour comparison subtraction with positive and negative integers.
Intentionality…
The purpose of the day 4 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 3. Students will engage in a math talk and will have an opportunity to complete independent purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas.
- Situations involving addition and subtraction can be modelled using a number line;
- Integers include zero, all whole numbers and their opposites;
- Integers represented on a number line show their relative distance from zero;
- An integer can represent a change or a quantity;
- Two integers can be represented as positions on a number line to determine the distance between them (magnitude);
- The order in which a subtraction statement is written is important.
Math Talk
In today’s visual math talk, present each pair of hikers along the hiking trail. The altitude above sea level is marked along their path. For each pair of hikers, students are asked to determine the distance between Hiker 1 and Hiker 2. Encourage students to write a subtraction equation to represent each scenario and solve.
