Students will be presented with a subtraction context and explore the place value as a strategy to solve the problem.

Intentionality…

The purpose of these activities is to reinforce key concepts from the first Spark. 

Educators can choose some or all of the activities shared below to use during small group, whole group, or individually with students.

Students will practice and become more familiar with the 5 frame as a tool to support their learning and will have an opportunity to investigate how numbers are related to 5 as an achor. 

The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas. 

• Develop an understanding of quantity and numerical relationship to 5
• Develop an understanding of how a 5 frame allows them to communicate their understanding of numbers (e.g., more and less, how many more and less)
• Develop their ability to use a 5 frame to support them in counting and organizing their counting
• Learn how to represent different quantities using a 5 frame as a tool
• Numbers can be taken apart (decomposed) and put together (recomposed). 
• We can use objects, pictures, symbols, and/or words to represent number and quantity.
