Students will continue exploring percent as operator in topics related to financial literacy. Students will use mental math strategies to increase and decrease a whole number by a percent. They will leverage the distributive property of multiplication over addition and over subtraction by composing and decomposing percents.Â

## Intentionalityâ€¦

The purpose of the Day 4 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 3. Students will engage in a math talk and will have an opportunity to complete independent purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas.Â

• Â Fractions, decimals, and percents can all represent relationships to a whole;
• Any fraction, decimal or percent can be used as an operator;
• Certain equivalent representations of percents and fractions are more helpful to do mental calculations than others;
• Decreasing by a given percent means the percent is subtracted from the whole;
• Percents can be composed and decomposed;
• Exchange rates can be used to convert Canadian currency into other currencies.

## Math Talk

The purpose of todayâ€™s visual number talk is to encourage students to leverage the distributive property of multiplication over addition and over subtraction when working with percent as operator. Through this visual number talk, students will have an opportunity to decompose into benchmark percents to determine the product when working with less friendly numbers.Â
