Students will demonstrate the concepts and skills that they have developed through this context and learning experience.Â
Intentionality…
The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the following big ideas.Â
- Percent is a comparison measured out of 100;
- Decreasing by a percentage will lower the original value.
- Increasing by a percentage will increase the original value.
- A percentage decrease, followed by a percentage increase of the same value will result in a change of value.
- Reducing a value by x% is the same as retaining (100-x)% of the value.
- Increasing a value by y% is the same as (100+y)% of the original value..
- To solve percent related problems we can use the following strategies:
- Analyze Between and Within Ratios (Scaling Up or Down);
- Find a Unit Rate
- Using a scale: y = kx.
The independent assessment will allow students to showcase concepts and skills related to the following learning goals:
- I will find percent of a quantity as a rate per 100;
- I will use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems
- I will use proportional relationships to solve percent problems;
Students might write and/or model their responses independently. Students can also be interviewed by their teacher.
An alternative assessment opportunity should be offered if this tool will not successfully capture what the student knows, understands or can do.
Math Talk
Present the various prompts below one at a time. For each prompt ask students to determine the cost of the bear after it passess through each price changer.
Model a few student solutions along a double number line for each price change. Reinforce the idea to draw a new number line after each change as the original value has changed.
Prompts:
$45 increases by 30%, decreases by 15%
$? decreases by 20% and the final price is $65
$112 increases by 35%, decreases by 12%
