In This Purposeful Practice…
Students will demonstrate the concepts and skills that they have developed through this context and learning experience.
Intentionality…
The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the following big ideas.
- There are different types of data;
- Data is often characterized as continuous or discrete;
- Discrete data is often countable and can only take on certain values;
- A measure of central tendency for a data set summarizes all of its values with a single number.
- Continuous data is measurable and can take any value (within a range);
- The slope of a line in a continuous line graph can help us draw conclusions;
- Average speed is the total distance divided by time through partitive division.
The independent assessment will allow students to demonstrate concepts and skills related to the following learning goals:
- I will create graphical representations with an appropriate scale and labels.
- I will describe the difference between discrete and continuous data.
- I will select from among a variety of graphs, including line plots, bar graphs and broken-line graphs, the type of graph best suited to represent various sets of data.
- I will determine measures of central tendency for various data sets, and use this information to compare two or more data sets.
Students might write and/or model their answers independently. Students can also be interviewed by their teacher.
An alternative assessment opportunity should be offered if this tool will not successfully capture what the student knows, understands or can do.
