The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the following big ideas.
- Flexible composing and decomposing of numbers
- Numbers can be decomposed by separating a whole into two or more parts
- Addition of numbers within 50 by using the strategy: Break Apart One Number
Students might write and/or model their responses independently. Students can also be interviewed by their teacher.
An alternative assessment opportunity should be offered if this tool will not successfully capture what the student knows, understands or can do.
Math Talk
In Day 4 of this unit, students were exposed to math talks related to adding 10 to decade numbers (e.g., 30, 40) as well as “off the decade” numbers (e.g., 23, 35, 46). The number talks for Day 5 will provide more opportunities for students to practice the strategy of decomposing one number. The last prompt in the set pushes the strategy beyond 50 to give educators the opportunity to see if the students can extend their understanding.
Prompts:
39 + 17
48 + 26
67 + 28
Visual Math Talk Prompt #1
The reveal of this prompt will provide educators the opportunity to explore the possibilities of decomposing one of the addends in different ways.
Some students may add to a decade number first and then add the remaining amount. Other students may decompose from left to right but adding the “tens” first then decomposing the singles.
Regardless of the action, educators need to ensure that student are decomposing the addends in an efficient way. In this prompt, it is more efficient to decompose 7 into 6 and 1 so that students can work from a decade number.
Visual Math Talk Prompt #2
Similar to the first prompt, the reveal demonstrates different ways that students may decompose the addend. Some students may add to a decade number first and then add the remaining amount. Other students may decompose from left to right but adding the “tens” first then decomposing the singles.
Regardless of the action, educators need to ensure that student are decomposing the addends in an efficient way. In this prompt, it is more efficient to decompose 6 into 4 and 2 so that students can work from a decade number.
