In This Task…
Students will explore ratios represented as percentages.
Intentionality…
The purpose of the Day 4 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 1. Students will engage in a string of related problems through a math talk and will have an opportunity to complete independent purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas:
- A part of a whole represented as a percentage is a part-whole ratio whose whole is 100;
- A percentage is one of infinitely many equivalent part-whole ratios in a ratio relationship;
- A percentage can be used to scale in tandem and reveal an infinite number of equivalent ratios in a ratio relationship;
- Partitive division can be used to divide a percentage by 100 percent to reveal a rate for the proportional relationship.
Math Talk
Related String of Problems
Represent the following fractions on a 0 – 1 number line. Ask students to build a theoretical probability context that could be represented by each model. Students are encouraged to share the ratio, and to express a percentage. This math talk will create an opportunity to deepen our understanding of theoretical probability, and explore equivalence.
