Intentionality & Unit Overview

Addition within 50

Length of Unit: 5 Days

Students will deepen their understanding of working with the numbers presented when they are adding. The numbers have been specifically chosen to elicit the Add Extra and Adjust addition strategy.

Intentionality…

The purpose of the Day 4 activities is to reinforce key concepts from Day 3. Students will engage in a string of related problems through a math talk and will have an opportunity to complete purposeful practice. The math talk and purposeful practice serve to develop a deeper understanding of the following big ideas.

Some of the big ideas that may emerge through this task include:

  • Understanding hierarchical inclusion allows for flexible composing and decomposing of numbers
  • Numbers can be decomposed by separating a whole into two or more parts
  • Addition names the whole in terms of the parts
  • Different addition situations will elicit different strategies
  • Number relationships provide the foundation for strategies to help students remember basic facts
  • Models can be used to connect concrete to abstract

Before starting this unit, students should be familiar with:

  • Rounding numbers
  • Adding decade numbers
  • Subtracting near numbers

Math Talk

To deepen the understanding of addition by thinking about the addends presented, have your students work through these problems one at a time. As you present each problem, provide students with some quiet, individual think time during which they can solve the problem and show their thinking on a dry erase board, paper, etc. Then have students share their thinking either in pairs or with the whole group.  As you facilitate these conversations, emphasize that the Add Extra and Adjust strategy is efficient because one addend is just under the decade.

The problems are supporting the move towards adding numbers mentally and creating number sense. Students should be encouraged to do parts of the addition in their head. For this purpose students need to develop a mental number line.

The last two prompts are stand alone without the rounded addend given. Can students round to the appropriate number on their own?

String 1:

23 + 10

23 + 9

String 2:

Visual Math Talk Prompt #1

Facilitator Note: The string leads students to realize that they can use their understanding of adding 10 to help with adding 9. Since 10 is one higher than 9, one more has been added. To adjust for this, students need to subtract one.  23 + 10 = 33 therefore 23 + 9 is one less than 33. The answer is 32.

Visual Math Talk Prompt #2

Students will be using the understanding of 36 + 10, to assist with 36 + 9. They have added too much in the initial question so now they can adjust that response to help with 36 + 9.
