Through This Assessment Opportunity…
The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate their understanding of the following big ideas.
- Flexible composing and decomposing of numbers
- Numbers can be decomposed by separating a whole into two or more parts
- Subtraction of numbers within 50 by using the Think Addition strategy
Students might write and/or model their responses independently. Students can also be interviewed by their teacher.
An alternative assessment opportunity should be offered if this tool will not successfully capture what the student knows, understands or can do.
Math Talk
The number talks for Day 5 will provide more opportunities for students to practice the strategy of Think Addition to subtract. The last prompt in the set pushes the strategy beyond 50 to give educators the opportunity to see if the students can extend their understanding.
Prompts:
33 – 27
45 – 26
72 – 48
Visual Math Talk Prompt #1
The first math talk prompt includes numbers that are close together. Encourage students to explain why they have used the Think Addition strategy in this case.
It is important that students see that strategy use should be dependent on the digits.
Visual Math Talk Prompt #2
The consolidation of this prompt may look different depending on how students are adding up.
In some cases, students prefer to “add to the decade number first”, which in this case is 26 +4 = 30. Other students may prefer to “add off the decade first”, which in this case would be 26 + 10 = 36.
Regardless of the students adding technique, it is important that students are adding up by using a known fact to them. We don’t want students randomly choosing amounts to add up by because then the strategy will not be as accessible.
