I have been teaching at-risk (read disengaged) kids for 15 years. The most important factor for engaging kids who aren’t academically strong is to build a relationship with those kids. I text my kids to prompt them to pick up their learning (they don’t check emails but they do text! Free text number through TextNow has been a lifesaver!). I make sure they know I care about their well-being and let them know why I want them to learn.
