The Battle of Fact Fluency and MS/HS Teachers
I was in the same boat when I was a high school math teacher…”why don’t these students know the math facts better (meaning quicker and more accurately)”. However, after learning and growing in understanding over many years, fact fluency is about accuracy, efficiency, and flexibility. Memorization is different than knowing from memory. We want students to not simply memorize, right? That won’t help in the long run…eventhough it might help in the 4th grade classroom “around the world” flashcard math competition – if that still exists. So my question is, how can I help 6th-12th grade teachers understand fact fluency better, that students using their fingers in 7th grade, or later, is OK, rather than questioning elementary teachers and most likely (albeit unintentionally) making students feel like they are bad at math because they aren’t fast enough?
