So, in the blink of an eye in New Zealand we went from teaching our classes on Monday to having to go into lockdown by Tuesday due to COVID-19. We will be in lockdown for at least 4 weeks…..

I am fortunate that I have been doing flipped lesson for the last 2 years so most of my work is digital which meant that the shift to online teaching has been easy and SOME of my students have rolled with it.

My challenge is to keep the students engaged and ensure they understand what is required of them each day.

I am making myself available online when I would usually teach the classes to maintain some routine but currently only have around 25% of my classes engage in the work.

Maybe this will change when they get bored of being stuck at home, not being able to to go to the shops etc…

I would love to hear from other maths teachers in this situation and hear how they are getting on….

    Tough times, indeed!

Sounds like you’ve had a bit of a head start with having much of your content digital already.

Are you expected to teach curriculum and assess or how are things being approached in your neck of the world?

We are endeavouring to continue with our curriculum – not too worried about assessment as I have junior classes but teachers of senior classes may be able to use evidence collected over a period of time rather than single short assessments. I guess it all depends how long we need to stay in lockdown for…..
