Something I really struggle with at my school is being the only math teacher for my grade levels! We are a charter school for the arts, grades 6-12, and I am the only math teachers for grades 6-8 (this past school year was 6-8 PLUS algebra 1 at the high school level, which was way to much to handle – I expressed this to my admin and they are lowering it down to just 6-8 for me this year). While I love the sense of autonomy that I have, I really wish I had someone to plan lessons with, someone to reflect with about what did and didn’t go well, etc. I’m hoping I can make some connections in the Academy to do this with online! Unfortunately, it won’t be the same as having someone to talk to in person every day, but I’ll take whatever support I can get!

    Hi there Derek,

Teacher isolation is a real, and unfortunate thing. I think there are many of us that, like you, teach the only class in their school, or feel isolated because the other teachers in their school are not open to working together. Lone Wolf Syndrome! That’s why so many of us have turned to social media or the internet to find like minded people. We’re so glad you found us and the academy. We know that together we feel like the math department we’ve always wanted.
