The present challenge I am tackling is how to integrate PBL, Mathematics and Assessment. Many math teachers tell me it can’t be done. They tell me that PBL is better suited for languages. As a non-math teacher I want to learn about best practices and find ways to create a collaborative, student-centered math classrooms where students learn the necessary building blocks of maths while expanding their horizons and engaging in deep thinking.

Lot’s of math teachers use PBL.  A simple google search will reveal a number of projects and advocates.  There’s also a number of books on the topic.  What the students make for the project can be anything.  You could have them make a presentation, write a program, prepare a play or write a paper.  One of the strengths of PBL is it’s interdisciplinary nature.  Best of luck on your endeavor, it’s certainly a worthy one.
