  • Out of Place in AZ

Hello all! I have been teaching for 7 years now, we have just moved to Arizona and I have never been so out of place before. I say this because I have lived and taught all over the world. S. Korea, Germany, and Maryland MD. All the schools have been international or IB based. I love to take the students outside, to experiment with math, I love having my kiddos play with math. I am not a fan of kill and drill, I have to give the district math tests, which my students find easy. I love having my students at white boards, talking, discussing, and collaborating. I want my students to love math and see the fun in that.

    Heidi,

I encourage you to continue with your current practices and be strong with how you love to teach mathematics. It takes courage to bring new ideas into a well-established school building but the students will be better for you taking that courageous step to maintain your teaching philosophy.

This site will help by providing both sound pedagogy as well as research-based practices.

      Hi Friends!

Yes, so happy you’ve found the community! We strive to “break free” from the many archaic practices that are still in full force in many schools’ math programs. It sounds like the culture at your school is fairly stagnant. Is it possible that you could help nudge (not force) your colleagues to elevate their practice?
