  • Open Ended/Rich Tasks

    There is a huge focus on rich tasks and open ended/messy questions right now. Some of our students are not enjoying them and I think it is the vague openness of them that they are finding frustrating. Teachers are also finding that the students also just need some direct intentional practice (I supposed you could say drill questions, where they can just practice the skill they’ve learned) So my big question is how do you all balance the open/rich tasks with the deliberate drill practice, is it all and none half and half, 75/25? AND, what strategies do you have to help your students persevere with, and even begin to enjoy, this new strategy for learning and exploring math topics?
