I am a at a middle school and have been teaching special education resource math for 7 years. I teach 7,8, and 9th grade math. My interest to teach math started when I ended up having a long term subbing position in a special education classroom. I loved it so much I returned to school to get my certificate in special education. I’ve taken many math classes along the way. Since I began teaching, I have tried 3 or 4 curriculum’s wanting to involve my students more in the math learning process. I have taken many PD courses about teaching engaging math and using lessons like 3 Act Math. However I’ve never felt like I have the time to create lessons. I stubbled upon the Making Math Moments podcast and have been listening and loving all the great ideas. This summer I read Peter Liljedahl’s book on Building Thinking Classrooms. I have been using VNP’s and have seen more engagement, but was still was reaching for more. When I found out Making Math moments had so many resources and some key ideas for increasing math engagement I feel like I stubbled on a resource to go to the next level. I’ve struggled watching my students become so disengaged and desire so much to make math fun and desirable for them. I love learning and improving my practice.
