Hello!
I am a grade 7 and 8 teacher in rural Manitoba. I started my teaching career in 2006. I have spent the past decade teaching a Grade 7 and 8 homeroom – so I teach them all the core subjects.
I have a math background, and wish that I got to teach math more often in a day – that’s would be my dream. I am continually sucked in by math ideas, math stories, and trying to make the subject more accessible and relevant to kids.
This year, a highlight for me has been seeing kids stay through lunch and breaks to puzzle and think about numbers. When discussing divisibility rules and WHY they work, one boy got hooked. He went home, and without any prior knowledge of any rule for “divisible by 11” he came up with a conjecture that we have yet to poke any holes in. The best part was hearing him say “I just started listing multiples of 11, picked ones that looked interesting to me, and started to try and uncover patterns.” I love seeing kids play in this way – with no boundaries or barriers.
I am looking forward to learning in this way. I have taken in the free webinars, following many of the math gurus discussed here and on the podcast, and knew I needed more!
Looking forward to continued learning!
