My name is Leslie and this is my 16th year in education. I currently serve as a Junior High Math Instructional Coach in Katy ISD in Katy, Texas. Our school houses 6th through 8th graders with on level and advanced mathematics courses, including Algebra 1 and Geometry. I have served as a 6th, 7th, 8th grade and Algebra math teacher, an at-risk administrator, as well as district math curriculum coach.

My most treasured story as an educator is one about a former student, Lauren. I served as her mentor throughout middle school and her math teacher. She was a junior bridesmaid in my wedding when she was a 7th grader. She was diagnosed with a learning disability and dyslexia as she transitioned from 8th grade to high school. I continued to support her throughout her journey into high school. She attended a local community college followed by a four year college receiving her undergraduate degree in Sports Medicine. Directly after, she started her Master’s degree. She is now serving as an Athletic Trainer for the very community college that she was a student at.

Now the special part…..I tutored a friend’s daughter, Hannah, as she was diagnosed as an 8th grader with dyslexia. I shared with her about a student I had while she was in middle school and she had the same struggles as she did. I was able to share with her the success that the student had found as she navigated high school and how she learned to advocate for herself as a college student. This student was Lauren. I was able to share She launched into high school and I stood side by side with her and her family as they navigated the world of high school math. She graduated and began community college. The fall of her first semester I received this picture. Both of the girls who shared a similar journey FOUND EACH OTHER on their own. These girls hold a very special place in my heart as an educator.

I joined Making math Moments Academy because my coordinator has shared many ideas from Making Math Moments matter. I want to add tools to my arsenal to better serve my teachers as their instructional coach.
