Hello, everyone! My name is Javier Cabezas. I am currently teaching high school math (9th grade, Algebra I) in Richmond, Virginia. This is the end of my fifth year in the classroom. Before teaching, I worked in corporate sales and in student affairs at a university.
My first teaching position was at an international school in Quito, Ecuador. After a couple of years abroad, my wife and I moved back to the States to continue teaching.
I decided to join the Making Math Moments Academy primarily because I have loved listening to the podcast. I am excited to be part of a community that is hoping to change the narrative of the math classroom in schools. I hope to learn how to create a classroom environment that empowers students to voice their opinion, challenge one another’s ideas, and to *think*. I want to learn more about how to successfully move away from arithmetic and procedural math classes into dynamic open-discourse classrooms.
I am content in the classroom for now, but I am working toward an administrative license and hope to enter the curriculum specialist space in the not-too-distant future. I am hoping to glean information here to apply to my classroom and eventually affect change across the school division.
I’m looking forward to collaborating with everyone here!
