    Hey there. My name is Erika and I teach math to 9th – 12th graders in a small private school in Lansing, MI. This is my 9th year teaching and I have spent all 9 of those years at the same school. Because the school is so small it has some interesting challenges. One of them this year is that half of my students are refugee children from Tanzania who speak English as a second langue and did not go through elementary school in the United States.

    Another challenge is that I am the only math teacher on staff so I don’t have anyone in my school to collaborate with. That is why when I started listineng to Making Math Moments that Matter podcast this year it had such a big impact on me. I joined the Academy to keep improving my practice so that my students walk away feeling confident and having skills for problem solving. I am looking forward to having like minded teachers to collaborate with and learn from.
