New Member: Angie Miller 8th Grade Math Teacher from Michigan
My name is Angie Miller. I live in Michigan. Next month will mark the beginning of my 19th year working in the same school district. Most of my career has been spent as a middle school (6-8) math teacher. Two years ago I left the classroom to become an elementary math/instructional coach but that position was recently eliminated. I found out last week that the 8th grade math position I left two years ago was available and so I will be returning to my old classroom this year. While I am excited to be teaching math once again, I am bound and determined NOT to go back to my old, traditional way of teaching (lecture, note-taking, examples, etc.). That is why I joined the Making Math Moments Academy. Since leaving the classroom I have been exposed to so many fresh, innovative, exciting, student-centered ideas for teaching math (3 Act Tasks, Number Talks, Open Middle, Numberless Word Problems, Which One Doesn’t Belong, etc.) and I want to learn everything I can about how to best implement these in my classroom. I feel like this is my chance for a do-over or maybe just a chance to do better for my students. I can’t wait to work with all of you!
