Hi there! I’m Amber and I teach adults earning their GED/HSE(High School Equivalency) in Illinois. I also provide math PD to other IL instructors that teach the same group of students. I started my teaching career teaching elementary students and when I moved I started teaching adults at the local community college. I fell in love with teaching in this setting and my roles in the field have only grown from there.

I’m an active member of the Adult Numeracy Network (ANN) and love figuring out new ways to better help my students understand the math they are doing. My students often come to class with math trauma or really poor math problem solving because of their lack of understanding in younger grades. Unfortunately, my adult students are those that fall the cracks in education and have the most barriers and now that they are adults themselves the barriers are taller than when they were kids. I love teaching math to adults though because there are so many moments where they say “I’ve never been taught that way before but I get it now” or “I never liked math until now”.

I hope to network with you all to learn and continue math best practice. I’m particularly interested in math tasks or ways to facilitate task based learning in classrooms where many students view themselves on independent tracks towards taking a test.

What a noble role you are in to help so many who have been left behind in our current education system. Excited to see that you’re taking the steps to also Make Math Moments for these adult students!
