    I thoroughly enjoyed this, it was so good!

    Some key thoughts from this presentation:

    1. excite curiosity

    2. use creative, accessible, messy, fun methods of getting to the big concepts you want to share (without steering away from what you may have thought is ‘too complex’ for the age group. By this I mean you can touch on aspects/concepts within e.g. algebra, without over-explaining; without it being the focus of the lesson, but instead, the relevant aspects of it being used as a tool/ stepping stone in the narrative you are taking the students along.)

    example discussed/ taken along in the presentation:

    instead of asking 6×7=42; you can ask 42=? (and don’t be afraid to introduce algebra concepts)

    X+y+z= 42

    X(squared) + y(squared) + z(squared) =

    X(cubed) + y(cubed) + z(cubed) = (can bring up the fact that they can utilize negatives now)

    … the solution can only be found by supercomputer (because the numbers are so big) this can lead to talking about the law of large numbers

    3. There is a call for romance before precision (once children have had the romantic interaction, the precision can follow) as “Math Anxiety is the late diagnosis of math alienation” (Peter Taylor)

      Romance before precision is so key… love that quote. We are constantly working from an estimate and through the revealing of big ideas, strategies and models, students can begin to increase their precision. Thanks for sharing!
