I am a little confused I thought on one episode it said each time a aTr spirals backs that the spiraled content should be more difficult but in this episode it was mentioned that when you spiral back you to a level below.

Great question. The idea is to start a little lower than where you left off as a means to ensure that all students can access the content. The goal is to push students beyond the place you left off last time.
As you can imagine, this is never a hard-fast rule and you must take into consideration the students infront of you to decide where exactly you want to begin and push to.

No matter what method I decide to use in my spiraling, I will need to be flexible and make pivots as needed. I see the spiral almost as “five steps forward” and “one step back” as you make the spiral for the students. That way they will hopefully have a level of comfort as you start reaching for the next layer of “five steps forward”.

Spiraling based on the big ideas may make sense in some units, however, I am hearing it doesn’t really matter. Making sure all the students are on board with wherever we take off again is so important, ie, don’t get too attached to the planning document we put so much effort into.
