So I have been working super hard at tracking learning goals and interleaving standards. Class is great students are engaged and seem to be learning. Unfortunately, my administrator and other teachers put a great amount of pressure on state testing. I just gave them a quarter assessment and many of my students scores went down since the start of the year. My methods seem new and unresearched to my admin. He wants me to stick to a textbook, direct instruction and follow the unit lessons day by day. How can I advocate for this way if students aren’t testing to show that it works? Feeling really discouraged. Help!

Aw shucks, that is a really tough spot to be in.
Something you might want to suggest to your admin is to listen to the episode of the podcast about spiralling. Obviously approaching this “gently” and not in a “see, this is the ‘right way’ to do it” or anything like that is really important here.
There is so much fear around change and I’d argue that it is so much easier for everyone to just do it the way we’ve always done it. It might not be better, but at least noone can point a finger in that scenario.
Something else to consider is that with spiraling, you want to make sure that you’re coming back to ideas often via assessment and then tailor your instruction to address where student learning is.

Any thoughts based on what we’ve written above?

BTW – we have a Q&A this Wednesday night. Maybe this is worth a chat then?

    Hi Charity,

I feel so much for you. My admin is completely on board with me. However, I’m experiencing some resistance from Parents. They love the idea of spiraling but are not happy about the drop in their child’s marks and annoyed that I don’t use a textbook. I have asked that they give me at least a term to see results. I’m going to link a youtube video that may be helpful to you, I know I showed this to my admin when the idea of spiraling was so new.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4jLANkgniSM
