Yes, productive struggle is missing in my classroom. My students don’t want to think; they just want me to give them the answer.

I do see teacher not wanting to give up the pre-teaching. The ask students to try things on their own but the students are not sure where the lesson is going so they are not sure how to meet the expectation. Students are also so use to teacher moves that reinforce one answer that they lack confidence that their approach is that one “right” answer.

Slowly but surely students will gain confidence in attempting unfamiliar problems. We have to make it safe for them to do so.

We can start with small moves, like bulletin boards that showcase creative solutions instead of highest grades.
