Hi there! My name is Gwyneth. I teach high school math at an alternate school. For many of our students, it is a “last stop”. They have not been able to make it in other schools in our district due to behaviours. Many other of our students suffer varying degrees of axienty/depression/mental health challenges. In short – major gaps in learning is a huge part of our students’ experience. I love what I have already gained from Making Math Moments that Matter (through the 9 week workshop and the tasks I’ve already used). The approach works really well in reaching students where they are at. Yay!

So happy to continue the learning.

Would you say that most students struggle with number and operations? If so, building community could look like using mini lessons to build those skills and in turn build community?

      Thanks for the reply 🙂

Number sense generally is a huge area of struggle…we found a structure that seems to work…we start with a Number talk, then do a Team Task (one of the 4M task often), and end with an Exit (usually a reflection – either shared verbally with the class or written in their math journals). Seems to be working really well…when enough come! When enough students come, it’s awesome!

That is a fantastic structure. Which resource(s) do you use for number talks?

We use from all over…Which One Doesn’t Belong, Splats, Dot cards (subitizing), Math before Bed, Estimation180, hmmmm…where else?! Our Monday talk is always a data talk – often from the New York Times – What’s Going On?…so many goodies. Let me know if you have others off the top of your head. 🙂

      Fantastic!

I’m a huge fan of strings of related problems. If you haven’t tried any, look at day 2 of our units… great visuals with rich discussions!
