Hi, my name is Sarah Albert and I just finished my first year in 8th grade math. Previously I taught 5th grade math for about 10 years. I have participated in many professional development workshops focused on teaching math. I was very “comfortable” in the 5th grade but made the move to middle school so I wouldn’t have my stepson in my class.  I would call our school medium size with 175-200 per grade level. We are departmentalized and have one intervention team with co-teaching in the math and reading classroom. Having full-time support of an interventionist is a blessing. They also just began this intervention model in the middle school so that was another reason to make the move.

So, being comfortable in upper elementary I had a good handle on the progression of major concepts and worked to scaffold the instruction so even students with severe learning gaps could be successful. Now at the top of the middle school I am learning the continuation of the progressions and searching for the knowledge to successfully scaffold at this higher level. I am so glad I found the podcast and now hoping this academy gives me the opportunity to get comfortable with this higher level of math.
