Hello from Nova Scotia.
Hello, my name is Mary Ali and I live and work in Pictou County, Nova Scotia where I teach grade 9 math at a rural high school. Additionally, I am the Acting Math Department Head; a role that is brand new to me!
I started teaching in 1981 when I was hired by CUSO to teach at a government college in Northern Nigeria. I lasted one year before terminating my contract and moving to Togo to teach at an American International School. In total, I taught 6 years in West Africa before continuing my teaching career in Nova Scotia.
I have two masters in Education from St.F.X. University in Antigonish, NS and a Certificate in Mathematical Sciences for Education from St.Mary’s University in Halifax, NS. I consider myself a curious person and thus have taken numerous professional development courses over the years. Furthermore, I have seen educational trends come and go. And I believe now is the most exciting time to be teaching.
I am grateful that I stumbled across Kyle Pearce and Jon Orr’s Making Math Moments as it has been a real game changer for me. It has totally changed how I approach teaching. I am most proud of how my teaching practice is evolving since I started listening to their podcasts, along with the great PD that is currently coming out of the Region where I teach.
My why is simple. In all the years that I have been teaching, I have never been satisfied. Success for all students was not happening in my classroom and that really bothered me. Today I see possibilities for success for all my students to learn math. It’s been a long time coming. I am ready for this!
