My name is Katie.  I teach 9th and 10th grade math — Algebra I, Geometry, and Honors Geometry.  The Honors kids are easy to teach — they’re comfortable with math and enjoy challenging problems.  But most of the students who aren’t in the honors classes struggle and are only in the class to fulfill graduation requirements, not because they want to learn math.

My top goal in joining the academy is to find tasks to engage the students who don’t love math AND learn how to teach with those tasks.  I want to teach them to wonder, to collaborate and go beyond memorizing the procedure.  I want them to love it as much as I do!

I have tried 3-act math tasks in the past and they haven’t gone well.  The students just zoom to an answer and put their pencils down.  I am hoping to learn how to engage the students to spend time thinking and wondering.

Hi Katie! Welcome to the Academy!!! It sounds like you’re doing some great things in the classroom with an excellent goal. I think you’re in the right spot as we look to help build our ability to teach through curious tasks that fuel sense making!

    Glad to have you here!
