Hi! My name is Ashley Parnell. Our family of 6 lives and teaches in Cairo, Egypt. However, we are originally from North Carolina. Right now, we are home for the summer enjoying family and beach time! I am a Learning Support Specialist. I teach 6th, 7th, and 8th grade math.
I attended a personalized learning workshop this past spring and I have been excited to make small steps towards personalizing our MS math program. Currently, we did start to use self-paced hyperdocs pre-COVID, which embedded some degree of choice and voice. However, I feel that we are still missing the authentic, relevant tasks that make math meaningful. We did embed these tasks into our “extension choice boards”, but all students did not have the opportunity to make these math moments:).
I have been listening to the Making Math Moments podcast for over a year and have been very inspired so I signed up for the academy hoping to take my learning one step further. My current goal is to create our Ratio and Rates units before our hybrid learning begins in the fall. I want to determine the best way to incorporate the Making Math Moments strategies and tasks into that unit (even though learning will be virtual), but most importantly how to scaffold instruction to support completion of these tasks. I listened to one of the recent podcasts that suggested various ways of incorporating these tasks, but still trying to figure out how to incorporate them in our instructional design for the fall!
