6th Grade T in Indiana – Progress Log
Posted by Garret schneider on March 26, 2020 at 7:36 amMy goal:
Learn how to teach through math tasks
Learn how to spiral my curriculum
Learn how to add reflection into my classes
Learn how games can be integrated into all of this!

Told my Instructional Coach I wanted to do the following next year:
Standards-Based Grading
Teaching Through Tasks
Spiralling
Her Reply:
Talk to my head of department
Told my Head of Department.
Her Reply:
Submit a spiralling plan to her
Talk to the Principal about Standards-Based Grading
So I’m working on the plan now!

Loving your progress log so far. Great ideas and a solid plan.
If I had to pick one place to start, I think I’d look at problem based lessons first and save spiralling until you’re feeling good about the lessons (and the curriculum if it’s the first time teaching the grade / course).
Thoughts on this?

Will do!
I’ve been teaching for a couple of years, so I’m cool with the curriculum.
I’ll start with the problem-based lessons (I’ve done SOME, but not nearly as effective as I would like), and then progress from there.
Man, being at home makes me over-plan, so I don’t want to bite off too much accidentally!
Thanks for the tip

Actionable Schedule:
Daily:
Investigate One Task
Work through one class/module
Weekly:
Update my progress log with reflections

Okay, here’s what I’ve done so far:
I’ve completed two courses, with a third (spiraling ) on the way
I’ve reviewed all the tasks, and will be investigating some next week
I’ve chosen two focuses for next year:
1) teaching through tasks (whether it be games, 3-act tasks, or problem strings)
2) classroom management: setting consistent rules and applying them. I just want my kids to be having fun with math, but in a more controlled environment than they have been in the past in my room.
