Big Take Away – I was surprised how close to zero 1 Billion actually is. The linear progression makes so much sense and I can imagine revealing the progression throughout elementary school.
Still Wondering – How to gauge where students are in their learning of magnitude through linear progression. Do I just keep taking one step back in the progression? Is there a better way to check their understanding?
I was teaching 7th grade and was asked to focus more on magnitude of numbers from an 8th grade science teacher and my first thought was to show a video that keeps going out into the universe from a person on earth. This wouldn’t have been all of the lesson but a starting point. But I was a little lost on where to go from that point. This lesson helps me a lot.
