In my mother tongue (Croatian) numbers have descriptive names. For example, 2 is called “dva”, 10 is called “deset”, so 20 is called “dvadeset”, meaning “two tenths”.If we want to say 21, where 1 is “jedan”, we will say “dvadesetjedan”. Still, children have a hard time, or rather it takes them a long time to fully understand place value. That can be seen when they study binary system in 5th, and later grades, long after getting used to calculating with natural numbers. They should be introduced, not necessarily to different number systems, but to different base systems, earlier in their schooling.
