I feel the biggest part that students struggle is staking ratio and working it back to rate especially when it ends to be faction. For example, the problem could be 10 cartons for 25 gallons. If worked back, students would have a table with the following:
X Y
0 0
2 5
4 10
6 15
8 20
10 25.
The table is correct but they wouldn’t have the rate nor do they totally understand how to get the rate. To add to it, when they find the rate 2.5 or 5/2 sometimes depending on the story, students have a hard time understanding what the rate/slope defines.
