starting with doubling and halving is a great way to gauge whether they are thinking or are ready to think multiplicatively. It isn’t something that can be forced, but we do want to continue nudging them in that direction. If they keep resorting to additive, maybe think about showing concretely what happens to the water and rice when you add vs multiply both quantities?
