As for the primary calculator, I wonder if you were to describe it as their “number line tool” or something similar… the linear or length model is so important for students to understand and leverage for number sense so there is no shame in utilizing it as a tool for thinking and a tool for representing.
I wonder if backing up and having them create their own “tool” out of connecting cubes for example which might be a bit less abstract at early ages? Just a thought…
