Being able to provide reasoning is the key. This allows for people to communicate better which leads to better understanding in all accounts. I say this because if students share their reasoning, as a teacher, I will then be able to help guide them down the right path. Also when share ideas, students are able to hear other points of view and then realize that there could be other possible ways of solving or looking at a problem.
The best part of starting with which one is bigger is not having a definition of what they should be looking for as this allows students to think freely and be more creative with their thoughts.
