I think I go back and forth between thinking students should memorize facts and believing that they should form understanding and automaticity with numbers. While I do think it is important for students to understand the meaning of 3×7, in 4th grade as we move into multiplication of larger numbers and multi-step problems involving multiplication, it makes it very difficult for students to complete when they have errors or are still skip counting or drawing pictures.
