I actually think that memorization of facts, esp. 1-12 in multiplication, is very helpful. Having automaticity with multiplication (be it using known facts, breaking a factor apart, etc.) makes it easier for students to conquer larger or unknown facts. (Sorry my talk is all multiplication. It’s pretty much life in 3rd grade.)
