    The visuals are superb as always and I do like the idea of starting with a notice and wonder routine to build some conceptual understanding before ever introducing symbols and notations to the integer work. I agree with Katrien that the concept of zero pairs sort of gets lost as you move from the concrete manipulatives to the number line representation. I do stress that a zero pair is like losing a dollar then finding a dollar. You are right where you started so there is no loss or gain.

    I think one of our hopes is that we get the opportunity to work conceptually with our students before they are exposed to “THE RULES”. I also know that integer concepts for most kids need constant repetition.
