    I am still shocked at how many of my middle schoolers don’t understand place value and I do believe it is because they were taught using rote memorization from a place value chart. I am a firm believer in the use of physical base 10 blocks to promote the learning of the place value system. They have been handy in helping students understand decimal operations as well as place value.

    Your video was a seamless presentation that can be used as a model of a thoughtful way to teach place value with understanding. I am so thankful for the way that you explained the meanings of eleven and twelve. I have read before that Japanese children do not have nearly the difficulty that American children do with learning place value partially because their language is of a form that has a word for eleven that is more like ten one, twelve is ten two and so forth up to nineteen is ten nine.
