I had a few experiences similar to your example of the 20 squares or 5 (units?). Teaching our learners a deep understanding of maths concepts is really important. They should have a strong foundation of number sense from Kinddy onwards. It is more difficult to reteach if they have weak of number sense.
It is also how teachers frame questions that would lead to a correct answer. I always emphaze my learners that their math algorithm might be correct but missing out the unit of measure is more important so it would be easier for them to compare quantities. Sometimes our learners tend to forget to include the unit of measures in their responses. However, over time they would develop that habit of “untising”.
