It is fun and challenging to teach our learners especially the younger ones. It is all about concrete materials, pictorial, and abstract representation. As experts would always say that all teachers are language teachers. This holds true with math teachers are also language teachers since maths uses language – the language of maths.
I had seen many teachers teach place value the wrong way especially teaching the teens. Using the Montessori materials especially the Spindle Box help our young learners understand the concept of place value. The progression of counting from 1 to 9 as ones and moving from 9 to 10 onward to 19 is a sensitive spot. It was always memorisation when you hear students say eleven is 11 instead of 1 ten and 1 ones.
