    Wow. First, I really liked the way the demonstration highlighted how we can deepen understanding by explaining the meaning of the numbers (English can be complex in itself), as opposed to “memorization without meaning”.

    Second, the demonstration also demonstrated how important it can be to be specific or clear when asking a question (i.e. “how many tens in 228”),

    Third, I liked the way answering “how many 10s in 228” can be shown in different ways. Having students share their thinking often reveals potential creativity in mathematical thinking!
